Overview

Noise Mate helps people turn recurring noise incidents into an organised evidence history.

Persistent noise is difficult to demonstrate because the evidence ends up scattered across individual recordings, notes, dates and recollection. Noise Mate is built around producing a structured record instead of leaving somebody with an unsorted collection of audio files.

The problem

Someone dealing with recurring noise accumulates recordings, dates, times, written notes and descriptions. Individually each one means very little.

The difficulty is not capturing sound — a phone already does that. It is that isolated evidence becomes harder to manage precisely as the number of incidents grows, which is exactly when it starts to matter.

So the problem the product solves is not "record noise". It is "turn repeated incidents into an organised history somebody else can follow".

The product

The application provides one place to log and organise noise-related evidence, designed around a record of incidents that can be reviewed over time rather than a set of unrelated files.

An incident carries the context that makes it meaningful later: when it happened, how long it lasted, what it was, and any note the person added at the time. Records are held against an authenticated account and synchronised to cloud storage.

Key capabilities

Incident logging

Record an incident with audio, timestamps and supporting notes, captured at the moment rather than reconstructed afterwards.

Evidence organisation

Incidents are held as structured records rather than files, so a pattern across weeks is visible instead of buried in a directory listing.

Chronological history

A reviewable timeline of incidents, which is the form the information needs to be in for anyone assessing a recurring problem.

Offline capture

Noise does not wait for a good connection. Incidents can be captured without one and synchronise when connectivity returns.

Cloud synchronisation

Evidence is associated with an authenticated account and stored in the cloud rather than existing only as local application state on a device that can be lost.

Reporting and export

The incident history can be exported as a structured report, so it can be shared with whoever needs to assess it.

Engineering

Authenticated accounts backed by cloud infrastructure mean evidence is tied to a person rather than to a handset, which is what makes a history durable enough to be worth building.

Capture has to work in the conditions the product is used in: at night, quickly, often without a usable connection. Offline-first capture with later synchronisation is a functional requirement rather than a refinement.

Privacy is part of the architecture rather than a policy page. Noise evidence can incidentally contain information about other people and private environments, so how recordings are stored, associated and shared is a design constraint from the outset.

Product experience

The design focuses on making each event understandable months later by somebody who was not there. A recording without context is not evidence of anything.

Capture is deliberately fast, because an incident that takes ninety seconds to log is an incident that stops being logged after the first week.

Outcome

  • Noise Mate is live and publicly available at noisemate.co.uk, with an Android application.
  • Recurring noise can be discussed against an organised record covering a period, rather than against a single recording or a recollection.

Our role

  • Product strategy
  • UX and interface design
  • Android application development
  • Backend and account infrastructure
  • Cloud storage and synchronisation
  • Reporting and export
